Creating Light Saber for Star Wars Halloween Costume
Dressing as Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader are my top choices for this year’s Halloween Party. Costumes are already set in except for the most important thing and it is considered as one of the distinction for a Star Wars character that is the Light Saber.
Building light sabers is certainly fun. I tried making my own light saber; you don’t need to worry about creating it in your own because they don’t exist. You can just build them they way you like them. Here are some instructions for your reference:
• Research on how the original light sabers were made. You should understand first what the light saber is. According to the Star Wars film, the light saber reflects the character and mood of its builder. The light saber of Luke Skywalker which was given by Obi-Wan was made out of a Graflex camera flash (circa 1940’s). The middle part was a clamp. It connected the flash and the camera while an emitter held the flash bulb. For Darth Vader, a Heiland flash, some wiper blades from a windshield, and some add-ons did the trick.

• For your light saber’s body, group possible materials. If you wish to imitate the original materials used for Luke Skywalker’s and Darth Vader’s light sabers, you can look for a Graflex or a Heiland though it may cost you some money when you purchase them from eBay so make sure you have saved enough. King Sol and Peak are good alternatives for it. You can also opt for Graflite, which is the newer version of Graflex.
• You can also look in electrical store or in a home improvement store for some materials. Search for a chrome-plated plumbing pipe, a metal or an aluminum flashlight, a PVC pipe, an aluminum tube, or a closet rod.
• Light saber grips are the next thing to look for. You can use rubber strips, rubber plumbing seals, large O-Rings, or any non-slip materials for running boards and ramps. You can make an alternative a rubberized floor mat; cut it and simply roll it around a tube. Or, you can directly order grip materials or rubber grips in some stores. You can also opt to wrap a cord or a wire around the handle.
• Be creative in the design of your light saber. Think out of the box. Just see to it that the essential light saber elements are well-accounted. You should be able to incorporate the part where the light blade comes out. Also, you should have a switch that can turn on and off your light blade. If you have the time and the resources, you can further accentuate your light saber. You can incorporate a grip for better hold, a knob control for your blade’s intensity and length, or a belt where you can actually attach your light saber.
When all of these are done, it is time to wear that Star Wars Halloween costume. Definitely, you will look noticeable and attracting with your light saber. May the Force be with you this Halloween!
